Bookkeepers can help you update, maintain and produce accurate accounting records. They are not Accountants, who are trained to take accurate accounting records and prepare them to submit to HMRC or other government agencies, for statutory reasons and make sure you pay the correct amount of tax. Many Accountants cannot update, maintain or produce accurate accounting records. This is why you should consider if you need both a bookkeeper and an accountant.
In the UK, since 2014, Bookkeepers and Accountants who are not your employees are required by law to be registered specifically under current AML (Anti Money Laundering) legislation. If you are a bookkeeper you must be registered.
If you receive assistance from someone who is not on your payroll, then you need to ensure they are registered or they could be working with you illegally.
